Dear Mr. President,

I am sending you this letter because I have weighed all of my options, and I have discovered that I have none. I know my duty to my country, but my obligation to mankind seems greater. I took an oath once, and my only dilemma is whether or not I should honor it now or disregard it totally by e-mailing this letter to you and the news media. They might not believe me at first. Hell, you might not either, but you will. You will have to! Once people start dying.... It all started about two years ago. I was hired by "BioMec" (a government sponsored research facility specializing in the manipulation and restructuring of human DNA). They had been working on some project for ten years before I arrived on the scene. The files on this operation are classified, but to make a long story short: A gross misuse of government funds was constituted when some balding, Four Star, General decided that he wanted to authorize my staff to play God. Our research had advanced beyond the point of just the altering of genes.

Lana Kim (my right-hand woman) had developed a formula for creating an advanced form of mitogen that could mutate the mitochondrion in the cytoplasm of eukaryotic cells. As you know, mitogen is an agent that induces mitosis; which is the process in cell division where the nucleus divides normally, resulting in two nuclei, each of which containing a complete copy of the parental chromosomes. This process is known to occur mostly during the conception of a normal child. The research that Lana had spearheaded, using genetically re-engineered mitochondria, was the result of what happened when the mitogen was attached to the membranes of energy-creating organelles within the human body after having been isolated. Mitochondrion contains its own set of DNA and ribosome that resemble those of bacteria; so it was a prime choice for the first experiments because it was a living part of the human body that has coexisted with man since the beginning of time.

The initial trial runs showed that cell division occurred on a subatomic level. Mitosis had been successfully induced within the mitochondrion, and the astonishing changes occurred not just in the molecular makeup of this organelle but also with the process of cell division itself. Instead of the production of two nuclei, like with the conception of a child when there is the creation of a complete copy of parental chromosomes, the cells within the mitochondria divided, mutated, and then came back together again in a new genetically altered configuration. The scientists in my "BioMec" lab actually created a new form of life on that day; an apparently sentient form of life! I know that you probably find this hard to believe, but, wait, it becomes even more incredulous. The object of this experimentation was so infinitely insignificant: A simple strand of hair.

General Warner oversaw the program, and he was the one who decided to donate some of his genes to the project. We took a few snippets of his hair, including the hair follicle. The General had thought that we might somehow be able to do something about his male pattern baldness. Five days after we had refined the process, and applied it using the technology that had been developed over the last ten years, we noticed something strange. There was actual autonomous movement among the separate strands of hair. Ten days later, there was an increase in the sample amount that we had collected. They were multiplying in number and growing without the aid of their life-giving flesh. The incredible thing about all of this wasn't just their rate of growth, but they had also begun producing their own version of mutated mitogen so that they could successfully self-evolve. Twenty days later, at 10:01 a.m. on August 1, 2001, I personally witnessed the lifeform's first attempt at communication. Considering what's happened since then, I find it difficult to remember, but I believe my exact words to my co-workers were: "You're not going to believe this, but the Goddamned hair's trying to talk to me!"

The newborn strands had actually curled together to spell out words. This entire ordeal was breathtaking, to say the least, but then something went wrong. We had a security breach soon after the hair had become fully self-aware. (Ha, I can't even believe how this sounds now that I'm writing it down.) Someone with high security clearance, and access to the project, had aided in the theft. We never narrowed it down to who exactly because people began dying almost immediately.

Lana Kim was the first person to come across the scene on the morning of August 9, 2001. During the break-in, the intruder dropped the petri dish containing the samples; it shattered and spread numerous strands of hair onto the floor. Our security cameras caught this person on tape, but their identity remains unknown. When Lana had entered the labI can only describe what happened to her as becoming infectedthe hairs, being as light as they were, found flight to be of no consequence, and they attached themselves to her head.

You can note the existence of an infection by a sudden itching in the affected area. Once taking root (so to speak) within a host, the hair follicle permeates the skull and secretes its own DNA into the brain so as to sort of sublet the mind. Following this there is excruciating pain and convulsions; which eventually leads to death. The human body doesn't seem to take to the transplantation process very well. It shuts down. The person who stole our research doesn't know what they've brought into the world! It's out there, and people are going to die if we don't do something! My lab has been locked down for several days, and I'm trapped inside. I'm the only one left. I fear the worst. I spend every moment being wary of when I'll first begin to feel the itch--Oh my God!
